Multi-Participant Musical Performance Experiment

Project goal: To explore the neural mechanisms of cooperation among individuals undertaking different roles in musical performance tasks, using functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS).

M = Melody as Leader

O = Rest as Observer

C = Accompany as Follower

We divided the music material into several components, asked different individuals to take different roles.

My Duty

  1. Designed and tested the equipment system in different situations for hyperscanning experiments and audio recording, ensuring synchronization between neural activity and recorded performance audio, and wrote code for precise tagging.

  2. Set up the system on-site, recruited participants, collected multi-modal brain activity data and other physiological signals (fNIRS, EEG, ECG, etc.). Recorded real-time music. Collected data from 59 listeners and 16 performers across 9 live concerts.

  3. Systematically archived both physiological data and detailed experimental process information, developed experiment protocols and equipment and material lists for future experiment.

Auditory Event-Related Potential (ERP) with Mental Disorders

Project goal: Personalize the implementation of music therapy, with initial work focusing on replicating ERP components in the Electroencephalography (EEG) of patients with depression, anxiety, and insomnia.

My Duty

Conducted literature research and wrote experimental code (PsychToolbox). Collected pilot data and replicated previous Mismatch Negativity (MMN) study. Set up the experimental system at the hospital and trained clinicians on experimental procedures and device operation. Completed longitudinal data collection from 20 patients with mental disorders at intervals of 0, 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks. Utilized EEGLAB (MATLAB) for automated pre-processing, made preliminary data quality assessment and data analysis, focused on features like latency and peak.

Some preliminary results are in my writing sample.
