Moonlight is an original film created as my graduation project at Beijing Film Academy. It tells the story of a marginalized child HaoHao who grew up in a traditional courtyard and his estranged father, a businessman from the South. One night, they rediscover each other and find reconciliation through challenges and setbacks.

As the sound designer for Moonlight, I oversaw key aspects of the audio production, including recording and mixing the performance music, creating immersive soundscapes, and designing the emotional transitions within the film. The excerpt included in my portfolio showcases a significant scene in which the protagonist, HaoHao, discovers his father’s secret life as a drag queen performer.

The environmental sound design also played a key role. As HaoHao sneaks out, the transition from the indoor quiet to the mysterious outdoor ambiance is marked by subtle effects, such as the faint barking of dogs and layered environmental tones. During the performance, the sound evolves to mirror the scene’s emotional progression. For example, when HaoHao steps onto the stage to support his father, I incorporated live-recorded ambient audio, prioritizing authenticity over perfection, to highlight the raw emotional connection between the characters.

​Working on Moonlight deepened my appreciation for sound as a storytelling tool. From crafting tension in transitional moments to designing impactful climaxes, the audio complements the narrative’s emotional arcs. This project represents a milestone in my development as a sound designer, as I balanced technical precision with the emotional resonance necessary for cinematic storytelling.
